![]() I’m a big ole sucker for stories, I’d like to have seen even more elements as the ones in play were really well done.Īnd at number one in shocking anime betrayals, I don’t think you should buy this.ĭo I recommend this? Yes, if you enjoyed half-life, this is a must. ![]() I had some saving and crashing issues that, while sparse and mostly directly after autosaves, were still frustrating… and would have been rage inducing if they were in the middle of sections instead of just after the save kicks in.Better telegraphing of what is a puzzle time and what is a watch and do later time.I like it, but it is a little let-down as both the pervious expansion and the main game have a big bug to squish. It’s a story about how these guys escape, and nothing more than just go go go, gtfo, we gotta go. Honestly, I like that… but it made the whole affair feel anticlimactic. While not an issue for me in general, Blue shift makes use of environment and surprises to whittle down your hp and armour, there aren’t any big stomping set pieces where you find yourself low and fighting to just get through and restock, it’s all quite flat along the way. This makes it a quick fix to wait and see, so when it isn’t a wait and see issue, it can be quite frustrating for a moment or two as you realise you need to do something in the now. You can observe events or places you need to be now, but can’t resolve anything just yet. Part of this can arise from the way the game trains you to see that many puzzles are solved later. As previously mentioned, a couple of the puzzles are extremely frustrating to solve.Needs must in survival situations, though. Though it was macabre to be stripping your dead colleagues of their no longer needed protective vests. It was different to the HEV and power armour charge mechanics and felt right for the game. Blue Shift does more storytelling than either the base game or HL:OF ever did, with more moments that show character, develop the story, and make the facility come alive and feel lived in.Other than that its run and gun, talk to scientists, help out, explore, and find a way out of the complex. In fact the only real pace killing moments are a couple of puzzles which you feel stupid for not solving immediately after you’ve run past the solution a couple of times. Being so short and stripped back, the game is extremely tight and well-paced.Shoot aliens, murder soldiers, solve puzzles, and work your way through more of the facility in this tight and mostly well-paced after-dinner mint sized expansion. It’s funny how time has swapped the two for me now, but I gotta say that Blue-Shift is really good, much better than my memory credits it for, in fact, while Opposing Forces just didn’t do it for me.įinishing up my half-life1 set play through, Blue Shift has you placed in the shoes of one of the security guards in Black Mesa, and as we already know the events and formula it skips along quickly to the meaty part of the story, which sees a group of scientists trying to escape. No new guns, no new monsters, nothing really innovative or different, no bombastic and visually stunning pieces, and no big bad evil alien to squish… It is something very different, and much lower key when compared to HL:OF. HL:BS surprised me, which is difficult given I’ve played it before. TLDR: As good as it is short, which is extremely.
